Mrs. Carolyn J. McAlister, 80, widow of the late Billy John McAlister, Sr., passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013, in Mt. Pleasant at Hospice of Charleston.

Born March 23, 1933, in Kingstree, Mrs. McAlister was the daughter of the late David Lewis Johnson and the late Gertrude Haddock Johnson. She was a graduate of Hemingway High School and attended Coker College in Hartsville.

One of her favorite pastimes was fishing, and she loved the beach, but her greatest joy came from spending time with her grandchildren and her family. She had a joyful spirit and never met a stranger. Mrs. McAlister was a member of Hemingway First United Methodist Church where she sang in the Adult Choir and belonged to the Margaret Huggins Circle.

Survivors include her children, Rhonda McAlister Howell of Mt. Pleasant, Billy “Bill” John McAlister, Jr. (Dana) of Florence, and Cathy McAlister Ross (Richard) of Mt. Pleasant; her grandchildren, Billy John “Tripp” McAlister, III and Sullivan Reynolds McAlister, both of Florence; her sister, Louise Johnson Rast of Jacksonville, FL; her brother, Liston B. Johnson (Mary Lou) of Woodruff, SC; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Gertrude Johnson Chewning.

Graveside services, conducted by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, June 14, 2013, at the Garden of Devotion. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Hemingway First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

The family would like to extend a special “Thank You” to the Hospice of Charleston staff for their loving and devoted care during her illness.

Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Charleston, 4975 Lacross Road, Suite 200, North Charleston, SC, 29406 or to Hemingway First United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 6, Hemingway, SC, 29554.
