Alonzo Walton
Goins, Jr.
Aug 19, 1937 — Aug 30, 2026
Timmonsville
Darlington, SC
Alonzo Walton “Walt” Goins, Jr., or “Big Daddy” as he was affectionately referred to, 89, and widower of Louise Collins Goins, passed away at his home in Darlington County, South Carolina, on Sunday, August 30, 2026.
Born on August 19, 1937, in Bennettsville, South Carolina, Walt was the son of Alonzo Walton Goins , Sr and Lucille Ray Goins. Walt was a graduate of Fletcher Memorial High School in Marlboro County, South Carolina and later attended the University of South Carolina. Those early years established the foundation for a life rooted in work, faith, and family.
Walt retired from International Paper in Eastover, where he worked in the shipping department. His career there represented many years of steady service and commitment. In the course of his life, he also built a lasting legacy through the simple but meaningful pursuits that brought him satisfaction and kept him closely connected to home.
He enjoyed gardening and yardwork but took special pleasure and pride in maintaining his koi ponds. These interests were a familiar part of his daily life and reflected the care he gave to the spaces around him. He loved pets of all kinds; however, Ginger, his four-legged baby, held a special place in his heart.
Faith remained an enduring part of Walt’s life. He was a founding member of Oates Community Church in Oates, South Carolina as well as a lifelong member of Center Baptist Church in Hemingway, South Carolina. Over the years, he often filled in for pastors as well as music directors, serving wherever he was needed and contributing in practical, faithful ways to church life. In addition, Walt's faith and giving personality were further evidenced in his membership and work over the years with the Masons.
Walt is survived by his brother, Kenneth Goins, Sr., Atlanta, GA; three children: Susan (Ray) Rogers, Darlington, SC; Walt (Tonya) Goins, III, Lincolnton, NC; and Janice Robertson, Irmo, SC; grand-children: Laura Rogers, Suzanne (Jamie) King, Jason Rogers, India (Jamie) Rogers, Justin (Meg) Goins, Jordan (Ally) Goins, Kendall (Austin) Black, Erin (Blake) Irwin, and Holly Pearson; thirteen great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
In addition to his beloved wife of 70 years and his parents, Walt was predeceased by his sister, Beverly Goins and his great-grand-children Alistair Coleburn and Maddox Irwin.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, and Thursday September 3, 2026 from 4 PM until 8 PM at the home, 4708 Lawson Grove Rd., Timmonsville, SC, 29161.
