Betty Powell Dennis, 81, wife of Edward L. Dennis, Sr., passed away Saturday, December 22, 2018 in a Pawley's Island nursing center.
Mrs. Betty was a daughter of the late T. P. and Helen Shuler Powell. She was a graduate of the SC Bankers School and in 1957 she began her banking career when she joined Citizens and Southern Bank of South Carolina. She was made an administrative assistant in 1968 and she quickly advanced to Bond Officer with the US Government and Municipal Bond Department. She served as assistant Vice-President before being promoted to Vice-President and retired from Citizens and Southern after thirty five years.
She then joined National Bank of South Carolina in 1992 and was named Vice-President of Investment Services and retired after seven years at NBSC.
Mrs. Betty served on the Education Committee of the SC Bankers Association, as Vice-Chairman of the Low Country Group of the National Association of Bank Women, and an Executive Committee Member of the SC Bankers Association. She was a member of the Bank Administrative Institute and the Charleston Federation of Women's Club. She was also a member of the Board of Directors and past President of the Soroptimist Club of Charleston.
She and her husband where members of the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Pawleys Island, and they were Charter Members of the Epworth United Methodist Church in Charleston.
Surviving is her husband of 65 years, Edward L. Dennis, Sr.; son, Edward L. (Deborah) Dennis, Jr.; granddaughter, Tara (Cory) Sayles; great-grandsons, Wyatt and Grayson; siblings, Dohnree Cribb, Margaret (Randy) Miller, Gwen (Vince) Holloman, Ronnie (Janine) Powell, Julie (William B.) Varn, and Greg Powell. She was predeceased by two brothers, Harry Francis Powell and Joe Lynn Powell.
Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Thursday, December 27, 2018 in the Union United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, SC, will be in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 AM until 1:00 PM Thursday, December 27, 2018 in the Union United Methodist Church, 8209 Rose Hill Road, Georgetown, SC 29440.
