Obituary

Betty Stone Hanna, 87, widow of Stanley Udell Hanna, of Johnsonville, South Carolina, passed away at her home in Johnsonville on Friday, October 16, 2026. Betty built a life marked by steady work, faithful service, and care for others.

A daughter of the late Carlie Demris and Jessie Poston Stone, Betty was born on June 2, 1939, in Pamplico, South Carolina. She was a graduate of Hannah High School and Florence Business School, foundations that supported a career defined by dedication and professionalism. In her early years, she worked for Wentworth; however, Betty spent the majority of her professional life as an Executive Secretary for Wellman Industries, Inc. in Johnsonville.

Betty was known for the many ways she gave of herself in both daily life and in her church. A long-time member of Westside Free Will Baptist Church, she devoted countless years to its ministry and work. She served as a nursery worker, worked with children’s Sunday School, and was Church Secretary for more than 30 years. She also served as Benevolence Food Committee Chair for over 30 years and was the church’s official decorator for many years. Her commitment to serving her Lord in the church was an important and enduring part of her life.

Betty’s love for children was reflected not only in her church work, but also in the time and care she gave wherever she was needed. She loved to serve, and those who knew her also knew her as kind and considerate of others. She was remembered for a wonderful sense of humor that brought warmth to the people around her.

Betty enjoyed the pleasures of making a home welcoming and beautiful. She was a wonderful cook, loved to decorate, and was an avid golfer. She also served as a Team Leader for the ACS local Relay for Life, adding yet another chapter to a life of active involvement and service.

Betty is survived by her son, Rodney Udell Hanna; great-grandchildren: Mason Hanna, Caroline Hanna, and Myers Hanna; brothers, James L. “Buddy” (Gail) Stone and Randy “Shagg” Stone; sister, Dottie Lyerly; adopted daughter Clara (Dan) Mayo; and caregivers Amy Evans and Shelley Humphries as well as many loving nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband of 57 years, Betty was preceded in death by her grandson, Josh Hanna; her daughter-in-law, Jenny Prosser Hanna; her siblings: Helen Powell, Hayward Stone, Edward Stone, Jessie Mae Garnette, and Shirley Todd; and her sister-in-law, Gloria Stone.

The family would like to extend a special note of gratitude to McLeod Hospice of the Pee Dee for the loving and compassionate care provided to Betty during her final days.
