Dan
Gaster
Aug 25, 1933 — Jan 4, 2019
Hemingway
Hemingway, SC
Dan Gaster, 85, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 04, 2019, at his residence, surrounded by loved ones.
Mr. Gaster was born in Johnsonville, the son of the late Daniel J. Gaster and Claudia Johnson Gaster, and attended Johnsonville schools. He was a U.S. Army veteran during the Korean War. In his early years he was a farmer; he later worked 13 years at Wellman Industries. During the latter part of his life he worked in construction and became very proficient in carpentry. He believed it was important to teach his children much of what he learned in life. He instilled in his children strong Christian values and work ethic by example. Mr. Gaster was talented in many areas of life, but his favorite pastime of all was yardwork. He thoroughly enjoyed doing the grass cutting and weed eating and that was what he spent most of his days doing.
Mr. Gaster was a member of Kingsburg Pentecostal Holiness Church for 34 years and was currently a member of EL Chapman Church. To the locals of Hemingway, he was known as Mr. Dan "The Candyman". He loved passing out candy to people at local businesses. He would tell everyone "have a good day and Jesus loves you more than I do because He died for you."
Surviving is his wife of 67 years, Billie Jean Evans Gaster; children, Billie Lynn Thompson, Cynthia Ann (Donn) Williamson, Dannetta G. (Bobby) Hill, Marilyn Jean (Kyle) Gregory, Dan L. (Lori) Gaster; sister, Gladys G. (Earl) Daniel; nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, James William "Billy" Gaster, a sister, Frances "Juicy" Gaster, and a son-in-law, William Harvey Thompson.
