Deryl Bryant Newell Sr, age 76, of Greer, SC, passed away Monday afternoon at his home, surrounded by friends and family.
He was born in Hemingway, SC, to the late Lauris Finley and Mary Alice Newell. He was a graduate of Hemingway High School and enlisted in the United States Navy as an Aviation Machinist Mate in 1966. Deryl went to his first duty station in Meridian, MS, where he met and married his loving wife of 57 ½ years, Janice Phillips Newell. He did two enlistments in the Navy and served on board the USS Ticonderoga and the USS Ranger during the Vietnam War. Trained as an airplane and jet mechanic, he worked on F-4 Phantom IIs and was attached to the VF-154 Air squadron. He later became a Senior Design Specialist Engineer and Principal Control Systems Designer for 40 years with Fluor Daniel and 5 additional years with Mustang Engineering until his retirement. He enjoyed his retirement by spending time with those he loved, traveling to see family, and watching Westerns with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Deryl is survived by his wife, Janice; his daughter, Stacy Minter (significant other, Tim Satterfield); sons, Deryl Jr. and Daniel (April); grandchildren, Samantha Moody (Scotty), Brandi Moss (Aaron), Braxton Minter (Rachele), Bradley Minter (Jeri Ann), William "Bill" Newell, Brooke Minter (Bradley Woolbright), Lauren Newell, Layla Newell, and Brice Newell; great-grandchildren, Jerry Moody, Madison and Jolene Moss, Cecelia "Cece" Moody, Jake Newell, Maraleigh and Katherine Woolbright, Skyler Newell, and Josephine "Josie" Moss; and family pet, Badger Minter. Also surviving are his extended family members; aunt, Donetta Lawrence; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Cathie Newell, Gail Baker, Carolyn Mooney, Ronny Phillips (Debby), Diane Nester, Marie Sutton (Bennie); and Michael Munn (Ann); and many other relatives.
Deryl was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, Gene, Roy, and Robert Newell; paternal grandparents, Hiram Finley and Hatti Cribb Newell; maternal grandparents, Quilton Thurman and Mazie Mayo Hanna Matthews; mother and father-in-law CE "Berlin" and Luver Dee Munn.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 5, 2025, in the Old Johnsonville United Methodist Church. Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will be in the Old Johnsonville Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM Friday, July 4, 2025, in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel, 416 N. Main St., Hemingway, SC 29554.
