Dorothy Powell "Dot" Burrows passed away peacefully at her home on January 6, 2024.

She was born in Georgetown County on January 11, 1926, to Murray M. and Odell Godwin Powell, of Andrews, South Carolina. She was a graduate of Andrews High School.

On June 14, 1945, Dot married Hazel Burrows. Together they raised their two children, Michael and Ginger, settling in the Hemingway area of Williamsburg County. Dot and Hazel remained husband and wife until his passing on March 3, 1991.

After graduating from high school, Dot worked at the International Paper Company in Georgetown. She then focused her energies on raising her family.

Wherever she was, church was an important part of her life. While she lived in Georgetown, she was active in Georgetown Presbyterian Church. When her family moved to Hemingway, Dot became very involved in Indiantown Presbyterian Church, where she served as Sunday School teacher, women's circle leader, deacon, elder, and President of the Women of the Church. For her involvement in the life of the church, Dot was recognized with a Presbyterian Women Lifetime Membership, the highest honor given to Presbyterian Women. In addition to church life, Dot was a longtime volunteer with Hospice of Williamsburg County (which later became Tidelands Community Hospice).

Dot was also passionate about gardening. Her green thumb produced beautiful flower beds and bountiful vegetable gardens, wherever she lived.

In October, 2003, Dot made the decision to move to the Presbyterian Home of Summerville (now The Village at Summerville). It was a decision she never regretted. She was a vital part of the ministry of the Chapel, preparing communion, singing in the choir, arranging flowers, and being a joyful presence. Dot's passion for gardening continued at the Presbyterian Home, as she contributed her expertise to the gardens of fellow residents as well as the proper care of shrubbery around the campus.

In addition to her parents, Dot was preceded in death by her five siblings: Willard B. Powell, Legrand Powell, Ellison D. Powell, Grace Powell Sports, Geneva Powell Stone; and her son, Michael.

Dot is survived by her daughter, Ginger Richardson (Charles) of Georgetown; her daughter-in-law, Summer Pierce Burrows of Columbia; her grandchildren, Hal Metts of Georgetown, Layla Metts of Surfside, Jeffrey Metts of Conway, and Lee Black (Jeff) of Pickens, South Carolina; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 11, 2024 at the Indiantown Presbyterian Church, 4865 Hemingway Hwy, Hemingway, SC 29554. Burial will be in the church cemetery, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, SC. The family will receive friends and family from 1:00 PM until 1:45 PM Thursday, January 11, 2024 in the Indiantown Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall, 4685 Hemingway Hwy., Hemingway, SC 29554.

In lieu of flowers, Dot's family requests that memorials be made to Indiantown Presbyterian Church (4865 Hemingway Hwy, Hemingway, SC 29554-9768) or The Village at Summerville (201 W. 9th North Street, Summerville, SC 29483).
