Obituary

Elizabeth Lewis Fenters, 99, widow of Earl Fenters, passed away at her home in Hemingway on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.  Born on December 2, 1926, in Hemingway, she lived a remarkable life deeply rooted in her community and faith.

A daughter of the late Joseph Holland Lewis , Sr and Annie Sue Owens Lewis, Elizabeth was born on December 2, 1926  in Hemingway, South Carolina.  Lovingly known as "Betty" or "Wit," depending on which side of the family she was with, Elizabeth lived her life in the community in which she was born.  A proud graduate of Hemingway High School, she furthered her education at Draughon's Business School in Columbia, South Carolina. Her dedication to learning and service was evident throughout her life. A lifelong member of Hemingway First Baptist Church, Elizabeth devoted countless hours to her church family whom she served as the church secretary for twenty-four years.  Her faithfulness to sharing the Word of God was most evident in the fact that she taught Sunday School for fifty-five years to generations of congregants. In addition to her church activities, Elizabeth was an avid gardener who loved to cook.  Spending time with family was, above all, her greatest passion.

Elizabeth is survived by daughters Karen Fenters, Delores (Michael) Mann, and Wanda Simpson and daughter-in-law BeeBee Fenters as well as nine grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband of 62 years and her parents, Elizabeth was predeceased by a son, Phil Fenters and a grandson, Jeremy Simpson as well as siblings Leland Durward Lewis, Sr., Clifton Lewis, Junior Lewis, Vernelle L. Ard, and Lillian L. Harrison.

A funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 23, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. at Hemingway First Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the funeral from 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. in the Church sanctuary located at 200 E George Street, Hemingway, South Carolina, 29554.  Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will take place in the Rose Hill Cemetery located at 4681 Rose Hill Road, Georgetown, South Carolina, 29440.
