George Russell Sutton, 81, husband of Mary Dixon Sutton, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2024 at MUSC Health Black River Medical Center in Cades, SC.
George was born in Charlotte, NC, a son of the late Heath and Evelyn Wilson Sutton. After graduation from Indian Land High School, he attended Clemson University where, in addition to playing football and baseball for the Tigers, he earned a Bachelor's Degree in Science and Agricultural Education. George came to Hemingway where he taught science, biology, chemistry, and agriculture as well as coached football, baseball, and basketball. In 1977, George left education for a position as a Field Director for Roddenberry Pickle Company/Dean Food Specialty Company, where he later retired.
George was a faithful and active member of the Hemingway First Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and served as President of the Men's Club and Chair of the Administrative Council. George was also an active member of the Hemingway community. He joined the Hemingway Fire Department in 1982. In 1988 he became the Fire Chief and served in that capacity until 2023. George also served as a member of the Hemingway Town Council for over thirty years.
Additional lifetime accomplishments of George include being the first Indian Land Warriors' football player selected to play in the Shrine Bowl. He was also chosen to play in the North-South All-Star Football Game. He was a 2024 inductee into the Indian Land High School Athletic Hall of Fame and was a recipient of the 2024 Williamsburg County Township Award.
In addition to his wife, George is survived by his daughters Robin (Jamie) Altman, Sally (Ronnie) Coker, and Mary Adele (Zan) Tomlinson; grandchildren: Grainger Snow, Drew Altman, Erin Altman, Eli Tomlinson, Mazie Tomlinson, Blair Coker, and Brady Russell Coker; brothers, Wilson Sutton and Joe Sutton; and a large number of cousins, nieces, and nephews.
George was predeceased by a daughter, Paula Sutton Snow.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2024 in the Hemingway First Methodist Church, 201 East Broad Street, Hemingway, SC, 29554. Burial will follow in the Garden of Devotion Cemetery, 800 S. Georgetown Highway, Johnsonville, SC, 29555.
The family will receive friends on Friday, December 13, 2024 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel, 416 N Main Street, Hemingway, SC, 29554.
