Gracie Mae
Matthews
Jun 26, 1936 — Mar 29, 2025
Gracie Mae Powers Matthews, 88, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2025 at the McLeod Hospice House. A daughter of the late Marvin and Leecie Powers, Gracie was born on June 26, 1936, in Johnsonville, South Carolina.
She leaves behind a legacy of enduring faith, love and grace.
Though Gracie led a quiet, simple life, she had a profound impact on everyone who knew her. She possessed a beautiful heart, always seeing the best in people. She was generous with her love, and kindness and compassion were the themes of her life.
She was devoted to her Lord, her family and her church.
Gracie's most cherished moments were those spent with her family. Gifted with a spirit of hospitality, Gracie loved hosting and cooking for family gatherings. Her home was always open and filled with delicious food.
A member of Hemingway First Pentecostal Holiness Church, Gracie served with humility and faithfully prayed for her church when she could no longer attend in person.
Gracie is lovingly remembered by her daughters, Nellie Vonne Lupo and Debbie Wall; grandchildren Kacey (Scotty) Lambert, Jessica Wall, Brooke (Cameron) Shirlaw, Amanda Hanford and Jodi Cribb; great-grandchildren Annsley, Abby, Matthew, Kingston, Tate, John Cameron, Joseph, Cheyenne, Logan, Ethan, Emma, Nate, Caimon; three siblings, Shelby (Jimmy) Kiser, Leneu (Cora Lee) Powers and Mary (Thomas) Filyaw; and many extended family members.
In addition to her parents, Gracie was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Matthews; two sons, Jimmy Matthews and Kenny Matthews; three grandchildren, Kris Owens, Kevin Creel and Ashley Creel; son-in-law Rev. Michael Wall; daughter-in-law Laina Matthews; and many siblings.
Gracie's family extends a special thank you to the staff of Amedisys Home Health, McLeod Regional Medical Center Medical (8th) Floor and the McLeod Hospice House for the exceptional care they provided.
Gracie's faith has now become sight, and no greater statement could adequately describe her than this: "'Many daughters have done nobly, and well (with the strength of character that is steadfast in goodness), but you excel them all.'" Proverbs 31:29 AMP
