Obituary

James S. "Pomp" Altman, 81, husband of Nina Miles Altman, passed away on August 20, 2025, at MUSC Health Black River Medical Center in Cades, South Carolina.

Born on July 20, 1944, in Johnsonville, South Carolina, Pomp, as he was affectionately known to all, lived a full life rooted in the community where his life began.  He enjoyed spending his time in the outdoors where he was often found hunting, fishing, gardening, cutting grass, and, in his younger years, playing softball.  His greatest joy came from spending time with his family. He was a member of Hanna's Chapel Pentecostal Holiness Church and also attended the Word of Life Church. Whether at church, at home, or having his normal afternoon pack of nabs and drink at C & C/One Stop in his home community of Vox; Pomp was a beloved presence to those who knew him.

In addition to his wife, Pomp is survived by children: Jamie (Angie) Altman, Kim (Wayne) Marlow, Nicole (Jonathan) Moore, Randall Miller, Heather (Jammie) Owens, and Michelle (Tony) Powell;  eighteen grandchildren; one great-grandchild.  He is also survived by brothers Danny Ray "Mack" (Cindy) Altman and Jerry Lyn "Horny" (Betty) Altman; sister-in-law Brenda Altman; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Pomp was predeceased by his parents, Franklin (Sr) and Darlyene Hanna Altman as well as a brother Franklin E. "Junior" Altman; a sister Frankie A. "Shug" Elvis; and daughters Tammy Ball and Jennifer Miller.
