Kenneth Eugene "Gene" Tanner, 71, of Hemingway, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 3, 2026 at Prince George Healthcare in Georgetown, South Carolina.

A son of the late Kenneth and Nina Burroughs Tanner, Gene, as he was affectionately known by all, was born on February 21, 1955, inHemingway, South Carolina.  He lived a life rooted in simplicity, family, and community.

After graduation from Pleasant Hill High School, Gene went on to build a career as a carpenter. He spent the majority of his years working with Bill Moore Construction, where he eventually retired.

A man of simple pleasures, Gene found joy in the company of family and friends. He was an avid Clemson fan and a devoted supporter of all Carvers Bay High School sports teams. His enthusiasm for athletics brought him closer to his community and reflected his passion for supporting local youth. Beyond sports, Gene had a deep interest in war history.  He spent countless hours studying history.

Gene is survived by sisters: Kay Tanner; Sue (Johnny Owens) Gamble; and Cindy (Keith) Owens as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Gene was predeceased by siblings Martin Tanner and Ginger Tanner.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, April 6, 2026 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.  The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m. in the Church Sanctuary located at 11904 Pleasant Hill Drive, Hemingway, South Carolina, 29554.

Burial, directed by Morris Funeral Home of Hemingway, will take place in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery immediately following the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Gene's memory to the Carvers Bay Booster Club, 13002 Choppee Road, Hemingway, South Carolina, 29554.
