Mrs. Lera Altman Morris, 102, passed away peacefully Saturday, October 6, 2018 at Blue Ridge Nursing Home in Georgetown, SC.
Mrs. Lera was born in Vox, SC, a daughter of the late Wesley and Edith Lyerly Altman. She was one of nine children, five boys, four girls and she was the last living sibling. She was married to the late Johnny Morris where they shared 45 years of marriage and where Mr. Johnny served as the Police Chief of Hemingway for 25 years. The couple had one daughter, Johnnie Juliette Morris Powell, who died in 2005.
Mrs. Lera was a member of the First Baptist Church of Hemingway where she truly loved her church and Sunday School Class. She was employed for 50 years in various retail businesses in Hemingway, including Ruffin's Department Store, Ruth's, King and Queen, and Spring's Feed and Seed. She was a genuine "people" person always offering a helping hand.
Survivors include her 6 grandchildren, Vickie (Larry) Baxley, Melody (Jackie) McGee, Tammy Stone, Dewey M. "Bubba" (Melinda) Powell, III, Curtis Powell, and Walt Powell; 9 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren; special friend, Judy Player.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 9, 2018 in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel with burial in the Old Johnsonville Cemetery, 800 S. Georgetown Hwy, Johnsonville, SC 29555.
The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM until 2:00 PM Tuesday, October 9, 2018 in the Morris Funeral Home Chapel, 416 N. Main St., Hemingway, SC 29554.
