Obituary

Hemingway, SC

Manning Bellinger Patterson, 97 of Hemingway, SC, husband of Betty Swinnie Patterson for 73 years, entered into eternal rest at his home, Thursday, September 5th, 2024. A graveside service will be held Sunday, September 8th 2024, at 2:00 PM at the Garden of Devotion Cemetery, 815 S. Georgetown Highway, Johnsonville, SC. The family will receive guests and friends at the graveside service.

Manning was born July 22,1927 in Georgetown, SC to James O. and Iva Lee Patterson. Manning was a proud veteran serving our nation in both the Navy and Air Force branches of military service. He attended the University of South Carolina where he became a lifelong proud Gamecock! He ran track for the Gamecocks and earned a degree in Business Administration.

It was during this time that he met his wife of 73 years, Betty Ann Swinnie of Andrews, SC. He worked for several years in Pacolet, SC with Deering-Milliken before he and Betty moved to Hemingway SC, 1954 where he became the owner and operator of a Western Auto Store, serving the people of Hemingway for 23 years. He later served the community through the court system as a local and county Magistrate. Manning loved the people of Hemingway and was always involved with the community. He was also very involved with Hemingway Methodist Church where he served in various capacities…but thankfully never sang in the choir!

Manning loved golf and played many rounds at Wellman Country Club with his golfing buddies. He even had a hole-in-one at Winyah Bay CC in Georgetown. He was a lifelong fisherman having grown up fishing the coastal waters around Georgetown. Manning was quick to tell a joke or an anecdote to his friends and often gave an encouraging "one liner" to those he encountered. One of his favorite phrases was "keep-a-goin". Manning loved music and loved to dance with his favorite dance partner, Betty.  He and Betty took many wonderful trips together and one of his favorite destinations was Florida where he took the family on annual trips after Christmas for many years. Manning was dedicated to his family having raised two boys in Hemingway and remaining faithful in marriage for 73 years to Betty.

Manning is survived by his loving wife of 73 years ,Betty Patterson who is 95 years old,  two sons, Arthur Patterson of Catlettsburg, Kentucky and David Patterson (Jenny) of Hemingway, SC; Four grandchildren,  John Manning Patterson of Hemingway, Bryan Bellinger Patterson (Kristen) of Florence and their 3 children, Anna, Sadie and Manning; Christi Boswell ( Gregg) and their 3 children, James, Joey and Meagan; Laura McFadden (Craig) and their 2 children, Holt and Meredith. There are many other extended relatives and friends that he loved like immediate family.  The family also extends heartfelt appreciation to the faithful caregivers who so lovingly attended to Manning and the wonderful friends in Hemingway who have looked after Manning and Betty.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Manning B. Patterson to Hemingway First Methodist Church, PO Box 6, Hemingway SC 29554.
