Richard Carroll Hughes, 90, husband of Sara Blackmon Hughes, passed away Saturday, November 20, 2021 after a long illness.
Carroll was born in Hemingway, S.C., a son of the late Richard Anderson and Getha Myrtle Hughes. He was a retired telephone facility man for General Telephone, dedicating 40 years of services to his work and community. He loved deer and fox hunting, fishing, gardening, bluegrass music, fellowship with friends and attending family reunions. He especially loved his grandchildren and spent a lot of his time with them in his retirement years.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sara Blackmon Hughes, two daughters, Kelly Altman and Amy (Jon) Pichardo, granddaughter, Caroline (fiancé Chris James) Hughes, grandsons, Alex (Abigail) Pichardo, Richard Altman and Peyton Pichardo, sister Rebecca Dunahoe, sisters-in-law, Rachel Hughes, Sarah M. Hughes, Mary Richardson and many beloved nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his first wife Christine Woodberry Hughes and infant son Kenneth Carroll Hughes, three brothers, Jack, Ned and Arlet and two sisters, Mary Nell Milling and Lydia Ellen Wofford.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at Morris Funeral Home Chapel, 416 N. Main St., Hemingway, SC 29554. Burial will be in the Garden of Devotion Cemetery, 800 S. Georgetown Highway, Johnsonville, SC.
The family will receive friends from 1:00-1:45 PM Tuesday, November 23, 2021 at the Morris Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Mr. Hughes may be made to the McLeod Hospice House (1203 E. Cheves St., Florence, SC 29506) or to New Life Ministries (510 Fairway Dr., Johnsonville, SC 29555).
