Obituary

Mrs. Ruth E. Smith, age 87, passed away peacefully late Monday evening, November 18, 2024 at the McLeod Regional Medical Center after a brief illness with her family at her bedside.

Mrs. Ruth, as she was affectionately known, was born in Gravesend, England on February 28, 1937.  She was the oldest child of Edith and George Jenner.  She grew up in Gravesend but worked in London where she met her future husband, Ian.  They subsequently got married on July 2, 1960 and moved to Carrick Fergus, Northern Ireland.  They then up and moved to the States in April 1974 and subsequently settled with their family in Johnsonville.

While her husband, Ian, was busy working for Wellman, she stayed busy raising their 3 children (Adrian, Diane, and Julian).  As that wasn't enough, she spent time volunteering as a den mother for local Cub Scouts and an EMT for the Johnsonville Rescue Squad.  She also occasionally filled in as a substitute school teacher.  But, most everybody came to  know Mrs. Ruth as the manager of the town swimming pool.  During the off-season, she enjoyed baking, doing jigsaw puzzles, and staying active in both the local Lions Club, where she served as District Governor, 2001-2002, and the Lions Club International.  She and her husband, Ian, also spent time attending the yearly Leader Dog for the Blind.

Surviving her are her younger brother Peter Jenner from England; children, Adrian (Candace) Smith of Aiken, SC, Diane (Jacob) Williams of Hemingway, SC, and Julian (Donna) Smith of Clayton, NC; seven grandchildren:  Michael Smith, Lindsay Smith, Patrick Smith, Wesley Williams, Winston Williams, Warren Smith, and Myles Smith; three step-grandchildren:  Taylor Arthur, Amber Arthur, and Alliyah Arthur; two step-great grandchildren, Kember and Kendall Arthur; and one new great-grandchild, AnneLaine Williams.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, November 22, 2024 at 2:00 p.m. at Cornerstone Church of God, 600 E. Broad Street, Hemingway, SC, 29554.  The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1:00 - 1:45 p.m. at Cornerstone Church of God.  Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials made be made in Mrs. Ruth's honor to Johnsonville Rescue Squad, PO Box 1021, Johnsonville, SC, 29555; Cornerstone Church of God, PO Box 893, Hemingway, SC, 29554; and/or Storm Eye Institute, 167 Ashley Avenue, Charleston, SC  29425.
