Hemingway, SC
Samuel Derrick Wall, 98, widower of Gertrude Perry Wall, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, August 22, 2018.
Mr. Derrick was born in Hemingway, SC, a son of the late Nathan Michael and Lettie Ruth Avant Wall. He was a retired farmer having grown tobacco, corn, and soy beans and retired from International Paper Co. as a machine operator. He enjoyed raising pigs, and cows, hunting, blue grass music, the mountains, and gardening; but he was best known for growing collards, watermelons, and peanuts. He was always willing to help his neighbors and friends, but his greatest joys were his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and his late wife Gertrude.
Surviving are his children, Carolyn (Greg) Springs, Julie W. Altman, and Erwin Wall; sister, Ruth Bolyn; daughters-in law, Edith "Edie" Wall and Cathy Wall; special neighbors who were like family, Tommy Newell and Harry Graham; caretakers, Linda Tyler and Janet Haney; special hospice nurse, Adaire Calcutt; 9 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; and a multitude of friends. Thanks to Wanda Duncan a loving niece, and her husband Mike Duncan, for their many visits and concerns.
He was predeceased by sons, Robert Edwin "Rocky" Wall and Allan Wall; son-in-law, Scotty Altman; brothers, James Wall, Robbie Wall, and Boyd Wall; sisters, Bernice W. Jacobs and Eunice W. Cribb.
