Obituary

Susan Sanders Lewis died on Wednesday, January 6, 2021 in Columbia, SC after a short illness.  She was born on September 23, 1926 in Charleston, SC to Joseph O'Hear Sanders and Lina Dobey Sanders. She was a homemaker and Sunday School teacher in the Columbia, Charleston and Hemingway areas. She is survived by her daughter Joanne L (Ken) Burghardt, son Leland D (Sharon) Lewis, grandchildren Will (Krystyna) Lewis, Christen (Barret) Mehaffey, Jonathan (Lauren) Burghardt, Matthew (Jenny) Burghardt and 7 great-grandchildren: River and Fiora Lewis, Kenyon, Maggie and Esther Burghardt and Jones and Poppy Burghardt. In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by her husband L Durward Lewis Sr, their daughter Suzanne Lewis, brother William Sanders and sister Mary Ann Sanders Seigler Munn.

Susan met the love of her life, Durward Lewis, at the University of South Carolina in Columbia SC when he was a returning WWII veteran. They were married in April, 1950. After living for 5 years in Charleston, SC, Durward, Susan and family settled back in Hemingway SC, raising their 3 children.

Holding to her Christian beliefs, she served First Baptist Church in Hemingway as Sunday School teacher to many fine young girls. She also sang in the Church choir. Once they moved to Columbia SC, she continued teaching a Ladies Sunday School Class at North Trenholm Baptist Church well into her 80's  until her eyes would no longer let her read the Bible that she loved so dearly. She spent her last years at Wildewood Downs Retirement Community. The family would like to thank the staff there, especially the staff in the Assisted Living and Long Term Care units, for their love and care of Mrs. Lewis.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in memory of Susan S. Lewis to the North Trenholm Baptist Church Foundation, 6515 North Trenholm Road, Columbia, SC 29206
