Vernon M. Tanner, 75, husband of Patsy Watts Tanner passed away Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at his home.
Vernon was born in Johnsonville, SC, a son of the late Hermon and Pearline Altman Tanner. He was a member and Elder Emeritus of the Indiantown Presbyterian Church as well as the Leo Masonic Lodge #310. Mr. Tanner retired from the National Guard after 36 years of service. He was also a substitute teacher for Florence School District 5 and served with the Johnsonville Fire Department. Mr. Tanner was instrumental in bringing recognition to the Chaloklowa Chickasaw Indian people and was the first Chief of his tribe. He served on the South Carolina Minority Affairs Commission. Mr. Tanner enjoyed woodworking and genealogy; but, his greatest love was spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Mrs. Patsy Watts Tanner; children, Sherise (Rick) Jakell, Jeff (Robin) Tanner, and Andrew (Angelica) Tanner; grandchildren, Joshua (Samantha) Jakell, Caleb (Sara) Tanner, Caroline Tanner, Madison Jakell, Isabella Tanner, and Natalie Tanner; sister, Elaine (John) Tanner; brothers, Benjie (Deloris) Tanner, and Gordon (Kathy) Tanner.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 23, 2023 at 3:00 p.m. in the Indiantown Presbyterian Church, 4865 Hemingway Highway, Hemingway, SC 29554.
The family will receive friends immediately following the memorial service in the Indiantown Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall at 4865 Hemingway Highway, Hemingway, SC 29554.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made in honor of Mr. Tanner to the Indiantown Presbyterian Church or the Indiantown Presbyterian Church Kindergarten c/o Indiantown Presbyterian Church, 4865 Hemingway Highway, Hemingway, SC 29554.
