WILLIAM DEWEY "DUKE" MILLER, JR .

Mr. William Dewey "Duke" Miller Jr., 79, passed away peacefully in Glasgow, Scotland, on February 19, 2021.  He was born in Hemingway, SC, on September 3, 1941, to the late William Dewey Miller, Sr. and Thelma Bernice Joye Miller of Hemingway, SC. In addition to his parents, Mr. Miller was also preceded in death by his beloved wife of 33 years, the late Sadie Callaghan Boyle Miller of Glasgow, Scotland; brothers William R. Miller, Maldon L. Miller, Johnny W. Miller; sisters Ruth M. Pizzuti, Frances M. Revetta, Dorothy M. Lee; and stepmother Lila Pearl Miller.  He is survived by his sister Jeanette M. Mack (Al) of Sandy Run, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews in South Carolina and Glasgow.

Mr. Miller grew up on his family's working farm in the Pleasant Hill community of Hemingway, SC, where they cultivated tobacco, various other crops and raised livestock.  He attended Pleasant Hill Elementary and High Schools and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, Hemingway.  He moved with his family to Columbia, SC, where he graduated Eau Claire High School and the joined the U.S Navy Reserves.  He lived in Costa Mesa, California for several years, where he was employed by Masters Specialties as an area field representative. He met his future wife Sadie in Laguna Beach, California and eventually moved to Columbia, SC to establish permanent residence.  Mr. Miller worked in shipping and receiving for Bestway Transports and Shakespeare Company, and provided security detail for local hospitals and public utility properties .

Mr. Miller was an avid follower of sports, particularly, the USC Gamecocks and minor and major league baseball. He was known for his remarkable memory of stats for a volume of baseball league teams and individual players. His interests in sports, natural skills and encouragement from coworkers made him a likely member of company baseball teams, where he quickly became known for his amazing left-handed skills. He was a fan also of the "Glasgow Celtic" of the Scottish Premiere League.  His other interests included fishing, solving crossword puzzles and playing cards.  Mr. Miller loved his pets and suffered a great loss when his two faithful fur buddies Shep and Duchess passed away.

Graveside service will be held at 1: 00 PM on Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church cemetery, 11904 Pleasant Hill Drive, Hemingway, SC. 29554.  Arrangements are being handled by Morris Funeral Home, Hemingway, SC.  Pallbearers include Danny Miller, James Barkley, Tony Bockus, Jonathan Black, Kenny Lee and Paul Davis. Honorary pallbearers include Hugh Boyle, Robert Boyle, Jim Boyle and Dennis Thomas.

Mr. Miller was a man of few words except to those who knew him and his heart well. His belief in our Lord and Savior was firm. His every day began and ended with prayer and personal devotions. He loved his family and held them close in heart.

Mr. Miller's family is grateful beyond words for Helen Boyle McGreechin, his late wife's niece, whose acts of kindness comforted Mr. Miller throughout his time of need while in Scotland.
