Anchored in the Past
In 1947, two young men and their wives had a vision that included serving the people of the Hemingway-Johnsonville areas. It was then that Merrit E. Morris and W. Carol Morris, along with wives Nell and Leona, opened Morris Funeral Home. As the service grew, so did the Morris Funeral Home family. Others who joined and were integral to the funeral home’s success included Cham Harrell (1949), Al Smith (1970), and Ellison Morris.
The colonial home, former residence of Mrs. D.H. Oliver, was renovated to house what continues to be Morris Funeral Home, Inc.. Additions over the years included a 200-seat chapel in 1962 as well as a showroom, embalming room, dressing room, and staff offices.

Today’s Morris Funeral Home, Inc. staff continues to uphold the proud tradition of service that began in 1947. The funeral home is still owned and operated by two gentlemen from the local community. The two owners and the staff (both full and part-time) of Morris Funeral Home, Inc. are community friends and neighbors with whom you might attend church, talk to at the grocery store, see at school functions, or even hunt.
Their commitment to each person who comes through the doors of the funeral home is to provide quality, compassionate, and personal care during your time of loss. While funeral traditions and services may have changed since the opening of Morris Funeral Home, Inc., the owners and staff still promise to provide the type of exemplary service that the people of our communities have come to expect of them.
